Phnom Penh, Dec 23 : Police in Cambodia arrested a man claiming to be an adviser to US President Barack Obama and head of an international finance organisation that stores its assets in caves and sunken ships.

 

Ray Dam and associate Soush Saroeun were charged with forgery Monday after being arrested at Dam’s home in Phnom Penh. They were accused of forging documents alleging connections with HSBC Bank, the US government and the UN.

 

The pair had been operating a self-described international real-estate consultancy known as Asia Real Property out of modern offices in the Cambodian capital.

A stampede that occurred during a festival in Cambodia‘s capital city of Phnom Penh has killed 339 people, officials said Monday.

Another 329 people were injured in the crush, said Philip Bader, a news editor with the Phnom Penh Post, citing information given by Prime Minister Hun Sen in a televised address.

Visalsok Nou, a Cambodian Embassy official in Washington, said more than 4 million people were attending the Water Festival when the stampede occurred.

But other reports put the number at 2 million., said Steve Finch, a journalist with the Phnom Penh Post.

Cambodia will host a series of summit meetings next week for regional leaders, according to a statement released Monday by Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The statement said Cambodia will host the 6th Cambodia-LaosVietnam (CLV) Summit, the 5th Cambodia-Laos, Myanmar-Vietnam ( CLMV) Summit and the 4th Ayeyawady-Chao Praya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) Summit on November 16-17, 2010 in Phnom Penh.

China and Cambodia on Thursday inked 6.4-billion-U.S. dollars deals ranging from infrastructure construction to energy exploration.

A total of 16 deals were signed after the hour-long talks between top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen late Thursday afternoon.

The package of deals covered such key areas of bilateral cooperation as infrastructure construction, water resources development, telecommunication technology and energy exploration among others.

In earlier talks, Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), the country’s top legislature, reviewed the smooth growth of China-Cambodia ties since the two countries forged diplomatic ties in 1958.

“Particularly in recent years, bilateral relations have developed rapidly,” Wu said, highlighting strong trust, sincere cooperation and mutual support.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will visit Cambodia next week, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said in a statement Monday.

The statement said that Hillary Clinton will lead a delegation to pay an official visit to Cambodia on Nov. 1, and she will be received in Royal Audience by Cambodia’s King Norodom Sihamoni, and will pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister Hun Sen and to hold a bilateral meeting with Hor Namhong, deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs of Cambodia.

Prior to her schedule in Phnom Penh, Hillary Clinton will visit Angkor temples in Siem Reap province for two days.

Clinton is planned to visit a series of Asian countries before coming to Cambodia including New Zealand and Malaysia.

The last U.S. secretary of state who had paid official visit to Cambodia was Warren Christopher in 1996 and followed by a working visit of Colin Power to ASEAN related meetings in Cambodia in 2003.
