SINGAPORE- Apple Inc. said yesterday it has launched its iTunes online store in Cambodia and 11 other Asian territories, including Hong Kong and Singapore, making it easier for customers in the region to buy and download music and videos. While Asian users of Apple’s iPhones and iPads are able to download applications such as the popular “Angry Birds”game, they have gift cards issued in the countries such as the U.S. and Britain. Asia is an increasingly important market to Apple—operating revenue doubled in the past quarter year on year, surpassing Europe, But previously only users in Australia, Japan and New Zealand in the Asia Pacific region could buy and download music and video, due to restrictions related to copyright and licensing issues. Apple made no mention of China, its biggest market after the U.S., where users can only access apps, and free content like podcasts. The other Asian territories are Brunei, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Vietnam.

The majority owners of Cambodian mobile phone provider Mfone lost more than US$13 million in the Kingdom last year.

Pointing to the large number of mobile operators active in Cambodia, Thaicom said there was a “price war and intense competition in the market” in its annual report, which added an appreciating Thai baht as a factor in the loss.

The Bangkok-listed company claimed a loss of 405 million baht (US$13.2 million) in its Cambodia results for 2010, on revenues of 959 million baht.

PHNOM PENH, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) — Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung arrived in Cambodia Monday morning to pay one-day official visit at the invitation of his Cambodian counterpart Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Nguyen Tan Dung was welcomed at the Phnom Penh International Airport by Cambodia’s Tourism Minister Thong Khon and other government officials.

During his visit, Nguyen Tan Dung will be received in a Royal Audience by King Norodom Sihamoni, according to the press release of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

Besides, Nguyen Tan Dung will pay courtesy calls on Senate President Chea Sim, National Assembly President Heng Samrin and will also hold an official talks with Prime Minister Hun Sen.

CAMBODIA, PHNOM PENH, Nov 10, 2010-Small and Medium enterprise and Microfinance Institutions with support from IFC, a branch of world bank on Wednesday in Phnom Penh gathered to seek ways to develop small and medium enterprises (SMEs) through providing the credits from banks, Micro financial institutions (MFIs)to expand their productivity to contribute economic growth of the country.

Cambodia will host a series of summit meetings next week for regional leaders, according to a statement released Monday by Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The statement said Cambodia will host the 6th Cambodia-LaosVietnam (CLV) Summit, the 5th Cambodia-Laos, Myanmar-Vietnam ( CLMV) Summit and the 4th Ayeyawady-Chao Praya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) Summit on November 16-17, 2010 in Phnom Penh.

Mfone Vs Metfone

TWO of Cambodia’s largest mobile operators – Metfone and Mfone – have blocked calls between their networks this week over a disputed US$500,000 fee payment, an official said yesterday.

 

The Kingdom’s second- and third-largest mobile operators respectively, as measured by government data on subscriber numbers, have taken turns blocking services since Tuesday, according to Mfone Chief Financial Officer Naruemon Sriphan.

The dispute arose over more than $500,000 in interconnectivity charges which Mfone believes was owed to it by Vietnamese military-backed Metfone, she said.

MANILA, Philippines – Cambodia has offered to sell at least 100,000 tonnes of rice annually to Manila as it faces a supply surplus, but no deal has been reached yet, the head of the Philippines state grain agency said on Friday.

Angelito Banayo told Reuters Cambodia has a surplus of 1 to 1.2 million tonnes of paddy rice which it can sell to other countries.

He said the Philippines, the world’s biggest rice buyer, was open to possibly purchasing the grain from its Southeast Asian neighbour.

University of the Sunshine Coast

THE Ministry of Tourism will receive assistance from Australia’s University of the Sunshine Coast to improve education standards and sustainable planning for the domestic tourism industry.

The two parties signed a memorandum of understanding at the public university in the state of Queensland earlier this week.

The deal will see Cambodia benefit from the University of the Sunshine Coast’s expertise specifically in eco-tourism planning, as well as training tourism professionals, according to ministry Chief of Cabinet Kong Solyda.

“The agreement has the potential to strengthen and improve professional skills of employees in the tourism sector in order to attract more local and international tourists,” he said yesterday.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will visit Cambodia next week, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said in a statement Monday.

The statement said that Hillary Clinton will lead a delegation to pay an official visit to Cambodia on Nov. 1, and she will be received in Royal Audience by Cambodia’s King Norodom Sihamoni, and will pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister Hun Sen and to hold a bilateral meeting with Hor Namhong, deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs of Cambodia.

Prior to her schedule in Phnom Penh, Hillary Clinton will visit Angkor temples in Siem Reap province for two days.

Clinton is planned to visit a series of Asian countries before coming to Cambodia including New Zealand and Malaysia.

The last U.S. secretary of state who had paid official visit to Cambodia was Warren Christopher in 1996 and followed by a working visit of Colin Power to ASEAN related meetings in Cambodia in 2003.
